SEO for Construction Companies: Rank in Google Maps and Search

SEO for construction companies comes down to three things: the right primary Google category, a review ask at every handover, and a website with a page for each project type you want more of.

Key findings

  1. The top 3 had a median of 35 reviews, and 3 in 4 had at least 17. Spots 4 to 10 had a median of 19, spots 11 to 20 had 16 and spots 21 to 30 had 12.
  2. "Construction company" wins the top 3. It was the primary category for 86% of the top 3, 77% of spots 4 to 10 and 68% of spots 11 to 20. "General contractor" grows down the list, from 2% of the top 3 to 15% of spots 11 to 30.
  3. In 17 of 21 markets, a top 3 company had fewer than 30 reviews. The top 3 median ran from 126 in Ottawa to 3 in St. John's.

What is SEO for construction companies?

It's the work that gets your company found on Google without paying per click: your Google Business Profile and reviews for the map results, and your website's pages for the regular results and AI answers. For a construction company, that means showing up for project searches like "basement suite contractor Calgary" in the towns you build.

There are two halves. Local SEO is your Google profile, category, reviews and listings, which decide the map results. Website SEO is your pages, titles, speed and project content, which decide the regular results and feed the map too. Construction buyers also shop longer than most: 23% of homeowners in our survey looked at six or more contractors before hiring2, so your pages have to answer their questions before they call.

What did we find on Google Maps?

The top 3 construction companies had about twice the reviews of spots 4 to 10, used the matching category far more often, and almost always linked a website. But the review bar is low compared with other trades, and it changes a lot by city. Here's what we saw in each of the 21 markets1.

We searched "construction company" in each market, signed out, on October 7, 2026, from 12:50 to 12:55 a.m. Pacific, and kept every listing: 530 organic and 17 sponsored in 10 searches.

The "weakest top 3 company" column is the lowest review count that still made the top 3 that night. Treat it as a target, not a formula.

How does Google decide which construction companies show in Maps?

Google says local results depend on relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews and rating). You can't change distance. You can change the category, the reviews and how well your website backs up your profile3.

Whitespark's 2026 survey of 47 local search experts ranks the factors behind those three words4. The top five for the map results:

RankFactorWhat a construction company should do
1Primary Google categoryMatch it to the work you want; 86% of the top 3 used "Construction company"1
2Distance from the searcherAccept it, and win wider searches with your website
3Keywords in the business nameDon't add them; Google says extra words aren't permitted5
4Address in the city searchedShow your office only if clients really visit it
5Open when someone searchesSet the hours you actually answer the phone

Which Google category should a construction company pick?

Pick the one that matches the searches you want most. For "construction company" searches, 86% of the top 3 used "Construction company" and 2% used "General contractor". If most of your work is renovations, homeowners may search "general contractor" instead. Choose the main one, then add secondary categories only for work you really do.

Primary categories on construction listings in Canada
Primary category Share of all 530 listings Top 3 Spots 11 to 20

General contractor 12%2%15%
Custom home builder or home builder 7%8%8%
Not shown in the list view 5%
Chart: Debut Marketing. Debut Marketing, 530 organic listings1.

Secondary categories can include general contractor, custom home builder, home builder, kitchen remodeler or commercial contractor5. Then make the website agree: if your primary category is "Custom home builder", your home page title and heading should say custom homes and the town.

Should a construction company show an address or set a service area?

Most should hide the address and set a service area, because the work happens on the client's site. Google says businesses that serve customers at their locations should hide their address, a virtual office isn't eligible, and a service area shouldn't extend more than about 2 hours' drive, with up to 20 areas56.

Your setupProfile setup
Office or design centre with signage, staffed during posted hours, where clients meet youShow the address and add a service area
Home office or a yard clients never visitHide the address and set a service area
Second office with its own staff and signageMay qualify as its own profile

Whitespark's experts rank showing an address when you're really a service area business 11th among suspension risks4. Don't rent a mailbox in the next city to rank there.

How many Google reviews does a construction company need?

Enough to beat the weakest company in your market's top 3, then keep them coming. For most Canadian markets that's 20 to 60 reviews. It's also the trust bar: 62% of homeowners in our survey wanted more than 25 reviews before hiring, and 87% put reviews in their top three reasons to hire12.

A renovation company might finish 20 to 40 projects a year, not 2,000 service calls, so every handover counts:

  • Ask at handover, in person, then send the direct link the same day.
  • Ask the people you dealt with by name. In our study of 99 BC construction companies, listings whose reviews named a staff member had a median of 35 reviews, against 11 where nobody was named7.
  • Text past clients from the last two years.
  • Never pay or trade for reviews, and don't ask only the clients you think are happy. Google's rules ban both8.
  • Reply to every review, including the critical ones.

Commercial firms have it harder. In the same BC study, 53.8% of commercial and civil listings showed a critical review excerpt, against 8.5% of residential listings, because neighbours and drivers write many of them7. Ask clients, architects and project managers for reviews so the people who hired you outnumber the people stuck behind your trucks.

Which keywords and pages does a construction website need?

One page per project type you want more of, each built around the searches for that project in the towns you serve, plus project pages, a process page and an FAQ page. Construction searches fall into four types, and each type needs its own kind of page.

Four types of construction searches, and the page that answers each
Search type Examples Page that answers it
Project basement suite contractor, home addition builder, custom home builderA page for each project type
Project and place renovation company Surrey, custom home builder KelownaThe project page, plus a town page where you really build

  • Project type pages name the project and town in the title, show three to six finished jobs, and answer cost, timeline, pricing and what's included.
  • Project pages give one finished job its own page: town, scope, timeline, photos. Google and AI tools can read these; a gallery with no words can't be read.
  • Town pages only where you really build. Google's spam policies warn against doorway pages: near-copies made only to rank for different towns10.
  • A process page. Only 35% of construction sites explain their process9.

Which on-page fixes matter most for construction websites?

Fix the basics Google reads first: a page title with the project and town, a meta description you wrote, one main heading, LocalBusiness structured data and a page that loads fast on a phone. Most construction websites miss at least one, and they're quick fixes for whoever manages your site.

Which listings and directories matter for construction in Canada?

Fewer than for most trades, but a few carry weight because homeowners check them before a big project: your Google profile, Houzz, HomeStars, RenoMark, your home builders' association, and the licence lookups for new home builders. Keep your name, phone and website identical on every one.

How do construction companies show up in AI answers?

By being easy to quote: project pages that answer cost and timeline questions in their first lines, associations and licences written in words, and reviews on trusted sites. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 45% of consumers had used AI tools for local recommendations16, and 26% of homeowners in our survey had used ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to research a contractor2.

Whitespark's experts rank the top AI visibility factors as expert "best of" lists, a dedicated page for each service, prominence on industry websites, mentions in news and associations, and reviews on third-party sites4. Ask two or three AI tools every month for the best construction company in your city, and note who they name.

How long does SEO take for a construction company?

Plan for 3 to 6 months before real movement and 6 to 12 months before steady calls. Construction's low review bar helps: in many markets, 20 good reviews and the right category get you onto the map within a season. Ahrefs found only 1.74% of new pages reached the top 10 within a year17.

MonthWorkWhat you should see
1 to 2Category, services, service area, tracking; review ask at every handover; main project pageLittle visible change; reviews climb
3 to 4Second and third project pages; process page; five project pagesFirst movement on project and town searches
5 to 6FAQ page; Houzz, RenoMark or association listings; past-client reviewsMore map appearances, first calls from search
7 to 9Town pages where you build; more project pagesNew pages rank faster
10 to 12Update photos and prices before springSteady inbound calls

Debut Marketing's working timeline, not a guarantee.

Narrow searches can move fast. T City Developments went from #97 to #4 on Google for "Vancouver duplex builders" in 30 days, because the site was built for that search before SEO started18.

What SEO mistakes do construction companies make?

The common ones: a gallery with no words, one services page for everything, keywords stuffed into the Google business name, fake addresses, near-copy town pages and no review habit. Each one either hides what you build from Google or risks a suspension. Fix these before paying for anything else.

  • A photo gallery with no project descriptions.
  • One "Services" page instead of a page per project type.
  • Keywords added to your Google business name.
  • A mailbox or virtual office listed as your address.
  • Fifty near-identical city pages.
  • No review ask, so reviews trickle in from the clients who remember.

Where should you start?

This week: set your Google primary category to the work you want most, add secondary categories and your service area, and find your market's review bar in the table above. Start asking for a review at every handover. This month: publish one page for your best project type, with five finished jobs and the town in the title.

Questions contractors ask

Is SEO still worth it for construction companies in 2026?

Yes. 76% of homeowners in our survey used Google Search to find a contractor2, and construction has a low review bar on the map. SEO takes months, so pair it with ads if you need calls now.

How much does SEO cost for a construction company?

Local SEO plans typically start at about $709 a month at agencies, with the middle half between $550 and $1,500, in our study of 69 agencies' published prices19. Doing it yourself costs time: a few hours a week.

How many Google reviews does a construction company need to rank?

In most Canadian markets, 20 to 60. The top 3 in our 21-market snapshot had a median of 35, and in 17 markets a top 3 company had fewer than 301.

Should I use "General contractor" or "Construction company" as my category?

Use the one that matches the searches you want most. For "construction company" searches, 86% of the top 3 used "Construction company"1. If most of your work is renovations, test "General contractor" and watch your calls.

Can ChatGPT do SEO for my construction company?

It can help draft page text and FAQ answers, but it can't get you reviews, take project photos or know your real prices and timelines. Edit everything it writes so it sounds like you and only says what's true.

I get website visits but no leads. Why?

Usually the page doesn't make calling easy: no phone number at the top, no quote button, no reviews. Only 29% of construction websites show a phone number in the first screen on a phone9. Fix that before chasing more traffic.

Should I make a page for every city?

Only for towns where you really build, with real projects on each page. Near-copy town pages can break Google's spam policies10.
