SEO for construction companies · Vancouver and across Canada

CONSTRUCTION SEO SERVICES

On Google Maps, the top 3 construction companies in our study had a median of 35 reviews, against 19 for spots 4 to 10. Our construction SEO services work in that order: your map listing first, then a page for every project type and town, then the answers AI tools give.

  • A Google profile set up for the projects you want
  • A page for every project type and every town you build in
  • Review requests that mention the project, the town and the timeline
  • A plain-English ranking report every month

The reality

Why most construction companies only rank for their own name

  1. Everyone picked the same category

83% of the construction companies we scored use "Construction company" as their main Google category. That's right for some. If most of your work is custom homes, a more specific category and a page to match put you in a smaller race.

  2. Neighbours write the reviews

In our study of 99 BC construction companies, 53.8% of commercial and civil contractors had a critical review among the first excerpts Google shows, against 8.5% of residential builders. Commercial firms averaged a D on their Google profiles.

  3. Reviews that say "great job" and stop

Owners want to know how the timeline and the budget went. In BC, listings whose reviews named a staff member had a median of 35 reviews, against 11 where no one was named.

  4. A website with nothing to rank

Only 10% of construction home pages link to a service-area page, and 38% use LocalBusiness structured data. One "Services" page can't rank for "laneway home builder Burnaby" and "commercial renovation Surrey" at once.

By the numbers

How many Google reviews does a construction company need to rank?

There's no fixed number, because distance and relevance count too. On the first page of Google Maps for "construction company" in 21 Canadian markets, the top 3 spots had a median of 35 reviews. In BC, 45 reviews puts a construction company in the top quarter, and 54 does in Metro Vancouver.

ListingsMedian Google reviewsAverage ratingNo website
Spots 1 to 3 63 35 4.72 3%
Spots 4 to 10 147 19 4.71 5%
Spots 11 to 20 210 16 4.65 10%

Google Maps public results for "construction company", signed out, 530 organic listings in 21 markets, October 6 to 7, 2026. A perfect score can work against you: 43% of rated listings showed 5.0 stars with a median of 11 reviews. We'd take a 4.8 with 60 reviews over a 5.0 with 11. How we do SEO for a construction company

    Google Business Profile

A Google profile for the work you want

Your main category and services set to the projects you want more of, real project photos, current hours and your real business name. No keywords stuffed into the name, which Google's guidelines don't allow.

A page for each project type and town

Custom homes, multiplexes, laneway homes, additions and commercial work each get a page with your own builds. Town pages explain what each city now allows on a lot, the first thing owners search.

Reviews that help the next owner decide

A text at handover asks every client for a review and suggests mentioning the project type, the town and how the timeline went. Asking everyone, not just the happy ones, keeps you inside Google's rules.

How it runs

What happens in the first six months

T City moved from #97 to #4 in 30 days because its new site was built for the search first. Most sites take longer, and we don't promise a ranking.

  1. First 30 days · Profile and pages

We fix your Google profile, choose the categories, and plan the project-type and town pages. The first pages go live.

  2. Days 30 to 90 · Reviews and links

Review requests run after every handover, and local links and listings get cleaned up. Searches for your own project types start to move.

  3. Months 3 to 6 · Rankings for project and town

Most construction sites see their map and page rankings move for "custom home builder [town]" style searches in this window.

  4. After 6 months · Compounding

Every page, review and link keeps paying. We add pages for the projects that sign and report rankings and calls each month.

Case study · T City Developments · Duplex and multiplex builder, Vancouver

From #97 to #4 for “Vancouver duplex builders” in 30 days

  • #97where they started on Google
  • #4where they were 30 days later
  • 5.0Google rating, with review requests built in

T City was a family-run duplex and multiplex builder sitting on page 10 of Google. We rebuilt the brand and website first, with a page for every build type and every city they work in, then ran SEO aimed at the search that pays: "Vancouver duplex builders". We also set up a CRM that asks every finished client for a Google review. Thirty days later they were fourth.

Through the year

When to start construction SEO so it lands in planning season

  1. June to August

    Start here

Profile, categories and project pages go live while your crews are busy. Most sites need a few months before project and town searches move.

  2. September to November

    Rankings land

Owners who want to build next year start picking builders. That's when you want to be in the top 3 for "custom home builder" in your town.

  3. December to February

    Reviews and winter questions

Ask last season's clients for reviews while the handover is fresh, and publish answers to what owners ask in winter: what fits on my lot, how long permits take.

  4. March to May

    New projects, new pages

Add finished builds as they wrap, and a page for any project type you want to grow this year.

What is SEO for a construction company?

Getting found on Google Maps and in search when an owner looks for the projects you build in the towns you work in. In practice: a Google profile set up for your project types, a page for each project and town, and a steady flow of reviews.

How much does SEO cost for a construction company?

Our plans are $1,400 and $4,600 a month, with no ad budget on top. Agencies that publish prices range widely: North SEO lists $500 to $1,495 a month for contractors, and Setsail's construction bundles start at $4,375 a month. Ask what's included, especially review requests and pages.

How long does SEO take for a construction company?

Most sites move within 3 to 6 months. T City went from #97 to #4 for "Vancouver duplex builders" in 30 days, but its new site was built for that search before SEO started. A slow template site with one services page takes longer.

How many Google reviews do I need?

Enough to match the top 3 in your town. Across 21 markets the top 3 had a median of 35. In BC, 45 puts you in the top quarter, and 54 does in Metro Vancouver.

Which Google category should a construction company use?

The one that matches the work you want most. If you mostly build custom homes, "Custom home builder" may fit better than "Construction company". Add the rest as secondary categories, following Google's guidelines.

Can a commercial contractor rank on Google Maps?

Yes, but the reviews are harder. Reply to every review, including the angry neighbour's, and put a site contact on your sign. Then ask each client and property manager for a review at handover, so the people who hired you outnumber the people who drove past.
