SEO for HVAC Companies: Rank in Google Maps and Search

SEO for HVAC companies means showing up on Google Maps and in search results without paying per click. Set "HVAC contractor" as your main Google category. Ask for a review after every job. Build a page for each service and each town you work in. And publish heating pages by August, not November.

Home with a lit great room in the snow

Key findings

  1. HVAC needs more reviews to reach the top 3 than any trade we've checked. A median of 567 across 21 Canadian markets, against 35 for construction companies12.
  2. The bar depends on the town. The weakest top 3 company had 3,916 reviews in Edmonton and 23 in Vancouver1.
  3. Homeowners hire on reviews. 87% of Canadian homeowners in our survey put reviews in their top three reasons to hire. 62% wanted more than 25 reviews before hiring3.
  4. AI tools are now part of the search. 26% of homeowners in our survey had used ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to research a contractor3.

What is SEO for HVAC companies?

It's the work that gets your company found on Google without paying for each click. It has three parts. Your Google profile and reviews decide the map. Your website decides the regular results. Both feed the AI answers at the top.

Part of the results pageWhat decides itWhat you control
Map pack (the 3 businesses with a map)Your category, reviews, distance to the searcherCategory, services, service area, reviews, photos, hours
Regular results (blue links)Your website pagesA page per service and town, titles, speed
AI answersPages and profiles that answer clearlyPlain answers, FAQs, listings on trusted sites
  1. 1Ads. Paid. They stop when the budget stops.
  2. 2AI answer. Built from pages that answer the question plainly.
  3. 3Map pack. Your category, reviews and distance decide it.
  4. 4Regular results. A page about that service in that town.

How many Google reviews does an HVAC company need?

Enough to beat the weakest company in your town's top 3, then keep them coming. In HVAC that bar is high. The top 3 had a median of 567 reviews in our check1. That's because HVAC companies do hundreds or thousands of service calls a year, and every call is a chance to ask.

We searched Google Maps signed out for "HVAC contractor [city] [province]" in 21 Canadian markets on October 6, 2026, and kept every listing Google showed: 570 in all1.

Chart: Debut Marketing. Debut Marketing, Google Maps snapshot1. The "weakest top 3 company" is the lowest review count that still made the top 3 that night. Treat it as a target, not a formula. Download the data (CSV): one row per listing, no names or URLs.

You don't need 567 to start winning. You need to beat the weakest one in your town, then keep pace. In Vancouver, Surrey, Toronto and Halifax, the top 3 had fewer reviews than you might think. Here's how to get there:

  • Ask at the end of every call, in person. The tech asks, then a text with the link goes out the same day.
  • Have techs ask by name. In our study of 99 BC construction companies, listings whose reviews named a staff member had a median of 35 reviews. Listings where nobody was named had 114.
  • Put your review QR code on every invoice.
  • Text past customers from the last two years.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad.
  • Never pay or trade for reviews, and don't ask only the happy ones. Google's rules ban both5.

Which Google category should an HVAC company pick?

Pick "HVAC contractor" as your main category, unless most of your work is one thing. 95% of the top 3 in our snapshot used it1. Then add other categories only for work you really do. Experts rank the main category as the number one thing that decides map rankings6.

If most of your work isMain categoryAdd these if true
Heating and cooling, all kindsHVAC contractorHeating contractor, Air conditioning contractor, Furnace repair service
Mostly furnaces and boilersHeating contractorHVAC contractor, Furnace repair service
Mostly AC and heat pump coolingAir conditioning contractorHVAC contractor, Air conditioning repair service
Duct cleaningAir duct cleaning serviceHVAC contractor

Then make your website agree. If your main category is "HVAC contractor", your homepage title and heading should say HVAC and your town.

  1. 1Name. Exactly as on your trucks and invoices. No towns or services added.
  2. 2Primary category. "HVAC contractor", like 95% of the top 3 in our snapshot.
  3. 3Additional categories. Only work you really do.

Show your address or set a service area? If customers don't visit your shop, hide the address and set a service area. Google allows up to 20 areas, within about 2 hours' drive7. Don't list a mailbox in a bigger city to rank there.

  1. 1Reviews. The count that decides the HVAC map more than any other trade's.
  2. 2Category. Shown under your name in every search.
  3. 3Service area. Address hidden, up to 20 towns.
  4. 4Hours. The hours someone answers.
  5. 5Services. Each system you install and fix.
  6. 6Updates. Jobs with the neighbourhood named.

Which keywords and pages does an HVAC website need?

One page for each service you want more of, and one for each town you really work in. HVAC searches fall into five types, and each type needs its own kind of page.

What goes on an HVAC service page

  1. A title with the service and town: "Heat Pump Installation in Langley | [Company]". Under 60 characters.
  2. One main heading that says the same thing.
  3. A short answer first: what it is, who it's for, what it costs.
  4. A price range or a starting price.
  5. Brands you install, warranty and financing.
  6. 3 to 6 real jobs with photos and the town.
  7. Your Google rating and a few reviews.
  8. 3 to 5 FAQs.
  9. A call button and a short form on the first screen.
  1. 1Call button. Item 9, on the first screen.
  2. 2Title and heading. Items 1 and 2: the service and the town.
  3. 3Rating. Item 7.
  4. 4Price and rebates. Items 4 and 5, up top where people look first.
  5. 5Short form. Item 9 again: three fields.

Prices help here too. 39% of homeowners in our survey said pricing information makes them trust a contractor's website3.

Town pages only where you really work. Google's spam rules warn against near-copy pages made only to rank in different towns8. Each town page needs real jobs from that town.

A rebate page. In BC, heat pump rebate searches come from people close to buying. One clear page on the current rebates, who qualifies and how you handle the paperwork can rank and convert. Link it to the official CleanBC Better Homes rebate page9, because amounts change.

Which technical fixes matter most for HVAC websites?

Speed on a phone, one heading per page, and code that tells Google what you do. A homeowner with no heat taps the first result and waits a few seconds. If your page is slow, they go back and call the next one.

  • Main content in under 2.5 seconds on a phone. That's Google's "good" mark for how fast the main content loads10.
  • Name photos before you upload them. "heat-pump-install-langley.jpg" tells Google what and where. "IMG_4471.jpg" tells it nothing.
  • Add HVACBusiness structured data to your homepage. Here's a Canadian starting point:
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "HVACBusiness",
  "name": "Your Company Name",
  "url": "https://www.yourdomain.ca",
  "telephone": "+1-604-555-0123",
  "areaServed": ["Surrey", "Langley", "Delta", "White Rock"],
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "addressLocality": "Surrey",
    "addressRegion": "BC",
    "addressCountry": "CA"
  },
  "openingHours": "Mo-Fr 07:00-18:00"
}

Swap in your real details. Test it with Google's Rich Results Test before you publish. Leave star ratings out of it: Google doesn't show stars for reviews a business collects about itself.

Which listings matter for HVAC companies in Canada?

A handful, and they need your name, phone and website written the same way on every one. These are the ones Canadian homeowners and AI tools check most.

Ask your manufacturer rep about the dealer locator. It's often a free link from a very strong website.

How do HVAC companies show up in AI answers?

By being easy to quote. Write service pages that answer cost and timing questions in the first lines. List your associations and licences in words, not only logos. Get reviews on more than one site. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 45% of consumers had used AI tools for local recommendations11.

Every month, ask two or three AI tools for "the best HVAC company in [your town]". Write down who they name. That's your AI scoreboard. Our AI search guide walks through the rest.

When should an HVAC company start SEO?

About three months before the season you want to win. New pages take time to rank. If you want furnace and heat pump calls in October, your pages should be live by July or August. For AC and cooling calls, aim for April.

MonthsWorkWhat you should see
1 to 2Category, services, service area, call tracking. Review ask after every call. Main service pagesReviews start climbing
3 to 4More service pages, a rebate page, 10 job write-upsFirst movement on service and town searches
5 to 6HRAI, TECA, HomeStars, Bing and dealer listings. Past-customer review pushMore map views, first calls from search
7 to 9Town pages where you work. Update prices and photosNew pages rank faster
10 to 12Refresh heating pages before fall, cooling pages before springSteady calls year round

Debut Marketing's working timeline, not a promise.

Ahrefs found only 1.74% of new pages reached Google's top 10 within a year12, so steady work beats a big push.

What SEO mistakes do HVAC companies make?

  • One "Services" page for everything
  • No review ask, so reviews only come from people who remember
  • Keywords stuffed into the Google business name. Google doesn't allow it13
  • "Open 24 hours" when nobody answers at night
  • Fifty near-copy town pages
  • Heating pages that go live in November

Where should you start?

This week: set your main Google category, add your services and service area, and start asking for a review after every call. This month: publish one strong page for the service you want most, with real jobs and a price range.

Questions contractors ask

How much does SEO cost for an HVAC company?

Local SEO plans start at about $709 a month at agencies, with the middle half between $550 and $1,500, in our study of 69 agencies' published prices14.

How long does HVAC SEO take?

Plan on 3 to 6 months before real movement, and 6 to 12 months before steady calls. Start before your busy season.

How many Google reviews does an HVAC company need?

More than the weakest company in your town's top 3. In our check, the top 3 had a median of 567, from 31 in Vancouver to 4,957 in Edmonton1. In a small town, it's often far fewer.

What Google category should an HVAC company use?

"HVAC contractor" for most. Use "Heating contractor" or "Air conditioning contractor" if most of your work is one or the other.

Should I make a page for every city?

Only for towns where you really work, with real jobs on each page. Near-copy town pages can break Google's spam rules8.

Can ChatGPT do my HVAC SEO?

It can help draft pages and FAQ answers. It can't get you reviews, take job photos or know your real prices. Edit everything so it sounds like you and only says what's true.
