Updated

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows in Google Maps and the map pack. Contractors rank it by choosing the right primary category, listing every service and town, adding photos of their own jobs, posting updates and getting steady, recent reviews that they reply to. It works alongside your website, not instead of it.

Who this is for: Contractors who serve local customers and want more calls from Google Maps and the map pack.

The reality

Why your profile isn't in the top three

  1. The wrong primary category

"Contractor" or "Construction company" when your best work is roofing or renovations. Google matches searches to your primary category first.

  2. A service area that stops at your shop

If the towns you want aren't in your service area and on your website, Google has no reason to show you there.

  3. Reviews that stopped

A burst of reviews three years ago and nothing since. Homeowners read the newest ones first, and so does Google.

  4. A name stuffed with keywords

"Best Roofing Vancouver Roof Repair" breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended. The real business name is the safe one.

  • Debut made us a great website and got our construction company ranking locally. Couldn't be happier with the results

  • Just over a year ago, I started my business. About six months in, things were going well, but I didn’t have a website. Then, out of nowhere, I got a call from Evan. He had seen my business on Google and noticed I didn’t have a website. Evan sent me a list of what he needed, but at the time, I was extremely busy, probably not the easiest client to work with. Eventually, we got everything in place, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The website looks great, I get compliments on it all the time, and more importantly, leads are coming in every week! Outstanding service, outstanding results. I’ll recommend Evan every chance I get.

Open your profile on Google Maps and tick what's true. Most contractors we audit are missing four or more. Every box you leave empty is a reason Google shows someone else.

Google Business Profile questions

What is a Google Business Profile?

The free listing Google shows in Maps and in the map pack: your name, reviews, photos, hours, service area and a call button. For local searches it's often the first thing a homeowner sees.

How do I get my profile into the top three?

Choose the primary category that matches your main service, list every service and town, add photos of your own jobs, post updates, and get steady, recent reviews that you reply to. Then give each service and town a page on your website that the profile links to.

Should I show my address?

If customers don't come to you, Google's rules say to hide the address and set a service area instead. Showing a home address can also cost you privacy.

Can I put keywords in my business name?

No. Adding towns or services to your name breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended. Use your real business name.

My profile got suspended. Can you help?

Yes. We find what triggered it, fix the profile and website to match Google's rules, and file the appeal with the right documents.

Can I offer a discount for reviews?

No. Google doesn't allow paying or rewarding customers for reviews, or only asking happy customers. Ask every customer, make it easy with a link, and reply to every review. See Google's review rules.

How much does profile management cost?

We set up profiles in the Foundation Package ($3,500, by application) and manage them every month in our Local SEO plans, from $1,400 a month. There's no separate profile fee.

Where to start

Most contractors manage their profile through Local SEO

The Local SEO Starter plan, $1,400 a month, works on your Google Business Profile and your website together, because the profile ranks best when the website backs it up.

Send us your business name and the towns you want to show up in.

  1. We look at your profile the way Google and a homeowner do.
  2. We check your category, services, area, photos and reviews against the top three.
  3. Within 24 hours you get a short list of what's holding it back.

P.S. Most contractors manage their profile through the Local SEO Starter plan. Valley West Concrete became the first company named in Google's AI answer for a new town. See how.
