Why Is My Construction Company Not Showing Up on Google Maps?
Construction company not showing on Google Maps? 11 causes, how to check each, what to fix first, and the review count you need in your market.
Why is my construction company not showing on Google Maps?
Usually because of verification, the wrong category, a bad address setup or too few reviews. But first check properly. Google's map results change with where the searcher stands, so a search from your office tells you little about a homeowner's search across town. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence2.
- Search the way a client would: "construction company", "general contractor", "home builder", "renovation company", plus the town. Each can show a different top 3.
- Use a phone where you want work, signed out, and note your position in the list.
The top 3 median ranged from 126 reviews in Ottawa to 22 in the Comox Valley1.
Is your Google Business Profile set up right?
Four profile problems cause most disappearances: no verification, a suspension, the wrong primary category, and extra keywords in the business name. All four are free to fix, and three can be fixed the same day. Check them before anything else.
1. Your profile isn't verified
Sign in to Google Business Profile and look for a verification notice. Google chooses the method: a phone or text code, email, a live video call, a video recording or a postcard. Postcards can take up to 14 days, and video reviews up to 5 business days3.
2. Your profile has been suspended
The dashboard shows a suspension notice. Appeal from the account that manages the profile, with a business registration or utility bill. Don't create a new profile while you wait; Google says not to4. For builders, the usual causes are a job-site or mailbox address, extra words in the name, or a second profile for a numbered company.
3. Your primary category doesn't match what people search
For "construction company" searches, 86% of the top 3 used "Construction company" as their primary category, against 2% for "General contractor", which grew to 15% in spots 11 to 201. Whitespark's experts rank the primary category as the #1 map factor5. Pick the one for the work you want most, and add the others as secondary categories only if you do that work6.
4. Your business name has extra keywords
Compare your Google name with your sign and invoices. Google says unnecessary information in the name, such as services or locations, isn't permitted6. "Smith Construction Ltd." is fine; "Smith Construction Custom Homes Renovations Kelowna" invites a suspension. Whitespark ranks name keywords #35, but the suspension risk isn't worth it.
Is your location set up right?
Construction companies work on clients' sites, so most should hide their address and set a service area, list the hours someone really answers, and make sure there's only one listing. Getting any of these wrong can hide you or get the profile suspended.
5. Your address or service area is set up wrong
If clients don't visit your office, hide the address and set a service area. Google says businesses that serve customers at their locations should hide the address, a virtual office isn't eligible6, and a service area shouldn't go past about 2 hours' drive, with up to 20 areas7. Never use a job site address.
6. Your hours don't match when you answer
Being open at the time of the search is a top 5 map factor5, and 10% of construction listings we saw said "Open 24 hours"1. Unless someone answers at 3 a.m., list real hours, as Google's guidelines ask6.
7. You have duplicate or old listings
Search your name, old names and phone number. Google allows one profile per business per location6. Claim any duplicate and ask Google to merge or remove it.
Are you behind your market on reviews?
Probably, if your profile is set up right and you still don't show. Find your market below and compare your count with the weakest company in the top 3. In 17 of the 21 markets, at least one top 3 company had fewer than 30 reviews, so the bar is reachable for most builders who ask every client1.
8. You have fewer reviews than the top 3
| Market | Median reviews, top 3 | Weakest top 3 company |
|---|---|---|
| Ottawa | 126 | 60 |
| Toronto | 90 | 21 |
| Regina | 68 | 55 |
| Edmonton | 55 | 54 |
| Thunder Bay | 48 | 41 |
| Surrey | 45 | 28 |
| Calgary | 44 | 29 |
| Chilliwack | 38 | 11 |
| Kelowna | 37 | 25 |
| Nanaimo | 35 | 17 |
| Kingston | 31 | 13 |
| Saskatoon | 30 | 9 |
| Sudbury | 30 | 15 |
| Vancouver | 29 | 25 |
| Red Deer | 29 | 6 |
| Victoria | 27 | 11 |
| Winnipeg | 25 | 6 |
| Halifax | 23 | 15 |
| Comox Valley | 22 | 2 |
| Moncton | 8 | 3 |
| St. John's | 3 | 2 |
Ask every client at handover, then send your direct link the same day. 62% of homeowners in our survey wanted more than 25 reviews before hiring8. Don't pay for reviews or ask only the clients you think are happy; Google bans both9.
9. Your reviews are written by the neighbours
Commercial firms get hit hardest. In our study of 99 BC construction companies, 53.8% of commercial and civil listings showed a critical review excerpt, against 8.5% of residential ones10, mostly about noise, traffic and site mess. Ask owners, project managers and architects for reviews, reply politely to every complaint, and put a number on your site signs.
Does your website back up your profile?
It should. A linked website with a page for each project type helps Google understand what you build, and every listing elsewhere should show the same name, address and phone. Only 3% of top 3 construction listings had no website, against 10% in spots 11 to 201.
10. There's no website, or a thin one
Link your site from your profile, and give each project type its own page with finished photos. 64% of the top quarter of construction websites in our study link to two or more project-type pages11. Google says information about your business across the web, including links, counts toward prominence2. Our SEO guide for construction companies covers which pages to build.
11. Your details don't match across the web
Check that Houzz, HomeStars, Facebook and the BBB show the same name, address and phone as your signs6. 68% of homeowners in our survey used more than one place to research a contractor8, so a mismatch costs you with Google and with clients.
What should you fix first?
The seven profile and location problems first, because they're free and fast; then the website and listings; then reviews, which take months. If you've fixed the first seven and still don't show anywhere after a month, look for a hidden duplicate or suspension history, or get a second pair of eyes.
| Cause | How fast to fix | Cost | Fix first? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Not verified | Days to 2 weeks | Free | Yes |
| Suspended | Days to weeks (appeal) | Free | Yes |
| Wrong primary category | Same day | Free | Yes |
| Keywords in the name | Same day | Free | Yes |
| Address or service area wrong | Same day | Free | Yes |
| Hours don't match when you answer | Same day | Free | Yes |
| Duplicate or old listings | Weeks | Free | Yes |
| Details don't match across the web | Weeks | Free to a few hundred dollars | Second |
| No website or a thin one | Weeks to months | Your time or a web project | Second |
| Behind on reviews | Months | Free, with a habit | Ongoing |
| Reviews written by neighbours | Months | Free, with a habit | Ongoing |

Questions contractors ask
Why can't I find my construction company on Google Maps?
Usually one of four things: the profile isn't verified or is suspended, the primary category doesn't match the search, the address or service area is set up wrong, or you're behind on reviews. Check them in that order.
How many reviews does a construction company need to show on Google Maps?
In most Canadian markets, 20 to 60. The top 3 in our 21-market snapshot had a median of 35, and in 17 markets at least one top 3 company had fewer than 301.
Can I use a job site as my business address on Google?
No. Use your real office if clients visit it, or hide your address and set a service area. A job site, mailbox or virtual office can get the profile suspended6.
Our new development or show home isn't on Google Maps. What do we do?
That's a map data problem, not a profile problem. Google Maps lets you report a missing road and add or edit an address12. In one Google community thread, a new road took about five weeks to appear after it was reported.
How long does it take to show up on Google Maps after fixing my profile?
Category, name and hours fixes can show within days to weeks. Closing a review gap takes months. Plan for 3 to 6 months before steady map movement in most markets.
