The reality

Why good painters lose estimates to worse ones

Homeowners can't judge your brushwork from a Google search. They judge everything else.

  1. Every painter's website looks the same

A roller, a colour swatch and "quality workmanship". When nothing sets you apart, homeowners pick the cheapest quote or the first one to call back.

  2. Clicks cost more than any other trade

LocaliQ's median painting click is $18.82 CAD, the highest in home services. Sending those clicks to a homepage that talks about everything burns the budget.

  3. No proof of the finish

The finish is what people are buying. Without before and after photos of your own jobs, you're asking them to trust a promise.

  4. Slow replies to estimate requests

People request two or three painting quotes at once. The first painter to reply and book a visit usually wins, not the best one.

Beyond The Brush fixed all four before spending a dollar on ads.

Case study · Beyond The Brush Painters · Residential painting, Vancouver

From website launch to 8 booked jobs in just 20 days

  • 8jobs booked from Google Ads
  • 20days from website launch
  • 7Xreturn on ad spend

A new Vancouver painting company with no brand. We built the logo, cards and a website with a page for every service and real before and after photos, then pointed Google Ads at the matching pages. In the 20 days after launch: 6 interior jobs, 1 exterior and 1 cabinet refinishing, at a 7X return on the ads.

I'm very happy with service from Debut Marketing. Evan is very professional, responsive, and has been great helping grow my painting business online. I really appreciate their communication and the effort they put into our marketing. Highly recommend!

Timing

A painter's year in BC

  1. January to March

    Interior season

Rain keeps exteriors on hold. Push interiors, cabinets and strata hallways, and book spring exteriors early.

  2. April to June

    Exterior bookings

Homeowners start planning exteriors. The painters with ads and reviews running now fill June to September.

  3. July to September

    Dry-season exteriors

Peak exterior months. Keep reviews coming and show finished homes on social media.

  4. October to December

    Back inside

Holiday-ready interiors, move-outs and strata work. Lower ad competition on interior searches.

Where to start

Most painters start with the Scaling Package

Beyond The Brush booked 8 jobs in 20 days with Google Ads pointed at the right pages. It's Google and Facebook ads, landing pages and instant replies, from $1,000 a month in management.

How much does a painting lead cost on Google Ads?

Our typical figure for painting is $193 a lead from Google search ads, the median across every published source we found plus our own campaigns. About 42 in 100 contractor leads book, so plan on roughly $460 in ad spend per booked job. The full table by trade is in our Google Ads cost per lead guide.

Should painters use Facebook ads or Google Ads?

Google Ads catch people already searching for a painter. Facebook shows your finished work to people who haven't started looking. Most painters do best with Google first and Facebook to fill the calendar ahead of the season.

How do I get more exterior jobs?

Start advertising exteriors in April, before the dry season fills up, with a dedicated exterior page full of your own finished homes. Exterior searches spike when the weather turns.

How do I stop getting tire-kickers?

Show a starting price or price range, use photos that show the quality you charge for, and ask two or three qualifying questions in your instant reply. It filters out the bargain hunters before you drive out.

Do I need a new logo to advertise?

Not always. But if your brand looks homemade, the click you paid $13 for often leaves. Beyond The Brush built the brand first, and it paid off. See logos and branding.

Do you work with other finishing trades?

Yes. Painters often share customers with renovators and flooring companies, and a homeowner who repaints often redoes the floors too. We market all three. See every trade we work with.
