The short answer

  1. Aim for 45 reviews to reach the top quarter in BC. The median construction company has 28. In Metro Vancouver the top-quarter line is 54 reviews; in the rest of BC it's 38.
  2. What the reviews say matters as much as the count. 96% of the most-reviewed quarter have reviews that name a staff member, against 52% of the least-reviewed quarter.
  3. Volume protects your rating. Companies with fewer than 10 reviews average 4.45 stars, against 4.83 for companies with 25 to 49.

After more than five years of running ads for contractors, I'd set a review target before I'd raise an ad budget, because the Google profile is where a lot of ad clicks end up. Here are the targets from the data, by region.

Companies whose reviews name someone have a median of 35 reviews; companies whose reviews name nobody have 11. That's a correlation, not proof of cause, but the pattern is steady: named, specific reviews come from companies that ask in person.

The three things BC homeowners write about most are people (79.8% of listings), timelines (63.6%) and budgets (53.5%). Those are also the three things a nervous future client is trying to find out.

Does the rating matter as much as the count?

A perfect score is less common than you'd think. 43.4% of BC construction companies show 5.0 stars, and the mean is 4.74. Companies with fewer than 10 reviews average 4.45, because one bad review drags a small count down hard. More reviews protect your rating.

Google's help page on local ranking says "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking" (Google Business Profile Help).

A 90-day plan to reach the top quarter

  1. Find your gap. Search "construction company [your city]" and note the review counts of the top 3 results. Your target is the third-place count or the regional top-quarter line above, whichever is higher.
  2. Ask at the right moment: the final walkthrough or the key handover, in person, by the person who ran the job.
  3. Make the ask specific. "If we stayed on schedule and on budget, it would help if you said so, and mentioned [name]." That prompts the three things that set the top companies apart.
  4. Text a one-tap review link the same day.
  5. Go back through 2 or 3 years of past clients. Most companies have far more happy clients than reviews.
  6. Reply to every review within a week, by name.

How we put this together

These figures come from the Digital State of BC Construction Companies on Google 2026. On September 29, 2026 we searched Google for "construction company [city] BC" in 20 BC markets and scored the 99 companies Google returned, using the same 100-point Debut Profile Score for each. The full method, the scoring rules and the limits are in the report's method section.

Review targets are percentiles of the review counts in the sample: the median, the 75th percentile (the top quarter) and the 90th percentile. The most-reviewed and least-reviewed quarters are the 25 companies with the most and the fewest reviews.
