How to Get HVAC Leads: Every Channel Ranked by Cost per Booked Job
The fastest way to get HVAC leads is Google Local Services Ads, then Google search ads for bigger jobs. The cheapest leads come from people who already know you: past customers, referrals and your Google profile. Whatever the channel, the company that answers first usually wins the job.
Key findings
- Local Services Ads book a job for less than half the ad spend of search ads. About $166 per booked job, against $426 for search ads12.
- Answering fast matters more than the channel. 84% of Canadian homeowners in our survey said in an emergency they'd hire the first contractor who picked up3.
- Google is still where homeowners look. 76% used Google Search to find a contractor3.
- Homeowners shop around for big jobs. 23% looked at six or more contractors before hiring3.
Which HVAC lead sources cost the least per booked job?
Here's every main channel, ranked. Paid channels are ranked by ad spend per booked job. Facebook leads are earlier in their decision and often book less, so Facebook shows two rates. Free channels cost time, not ad money, so they sit at the bottom with a note on what they take.
| Channel | Typical cost per lead (CAD) | Ad spend per booked job | How fast leads start | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Local Services Ads | $73 | $166 (44 in 100 book) | Days, once Google approves you | Repairs, no-heat calls, tune-ups |
| Facebook and Instagram ads | $61 | $145 if 42 in 100 book, $244 if 25 in 100 do | First week | Heat pump and tune-up offers, past site visitors |
| Google search ads | $179 | $426 (42 in 100 book) | First week | Heat pumps, replacements, bigger jobs |
| Shared leads (HomeStars, Angi) | Varies. Angi charges US$15 to $85 a lead in the US | Depends how fast you call. Other companies get the same lead | Same week | Filling gaps, new companies |
| Google profile and SEO | No cost per lead | Agency plans start around $709 a month | 3 to 6 months | Steady calls all year |
| Past customers | Almost free | Almost free | Same day | Tune-ups, replacements on old systems |
| Referrals | The reward you pay | The reward you pay | Weeks | High-trust jobs |

What are the fastest ways to get HVAC leads?
Local Services Ads and Google search ads. Both can bring calls within days, because they catch people who are searching right now. Facebook ads are fast too, but they reach people earlier, before they've decided to call anyone.
- 1Local Services Ads. The top spot, paid per lead.
- 2Search ads. Paid per click. Best for installs and replacements.
- 3Map pack. Free, and your reviews feed the ads above it too.
1. Google Local Services Ads
These are the listings at the very top of Google with the Google badge. You pay when someone calls or messages, not when they click. HVAC is one of the trades Google offers them for in Canada. An HVAC lead there costs about $73256.
Two things move you up: more reviews, and answering fast. Since October 1, 2026, Google can charge you for a missed call during your hours if the caller waits more than 20 seconds9. So only list hours when someone picks up. Our Local Services Ads guide covers setup.
2. Google search ads
The ads above the map with "Sponsored" on them. They cost more, about $179 a lead, but they win bigger jobs like heat pumps and full replacements. Split emergency, install and tune-up campaigns, and send each to its own page. Our Google Ads guide for HVAC walks through it step by step.
3. Facebook and Instagram ads
These reach homeowners while they scroll, before they search. They work best with a clear offer: a fall tune-up price, or heat pump rebate help. Show your real trucks and techs. A contractor lead here costs about $614, but these people are earlier in their decision, so call them back fast.
How do you get HVAC leads for free?
From people who already know you, and from Google's free listings. These take time and effort instead of ad money. They're also where your best customers come from.
4. Your Google Business Profile
It's free, and it decides whether you show on the map. Set "HVAC contractor" as your main category, list every service, and ask for a review after every call. Homeowners care: 62% in our survey wanted more than 25 reviews before hiring3. Our HVAC SEO guide covers the rest.
5. Past customers
Every furnace you've serviced is a future replacement. Keep a list with each customer's system age. Send a tune-up reminder each fall and spring. When a system passes 15 years, send a replacement offer.
- Every visit: Write down the system age. Brand, model and install year, in your customer list.
- Every fall: Tune-up reminder. Before the first cold week.
- Every spring: Cooling check reminder. Before the first hot week.
- Past 15 years: Replacement offer. Rebates, financing and a price range.
In Canada, check the anti-spam law before you text or email. Someone who bought from you can count as consent for up to two years, and someone who only asked for a quote for six months. Older lists need fresh consent10.
6. Maintenance plans
A yearly plan keeps you in the house every year. The tech sees problems first. When the system needs replacing, you're already the company they trust.
7. Referrals
Ask happy customers who else they know. Give a reward for each referral that books, like a credit on their next tune-up. Ask builders, realtors, property managers and plumbers too. They hear about broken furnaces every week.
8. Manufacturer dealer programs
If you're an authorized dealer, ask your rep about the dealer locator and any leads they pass along. Homeowners searching a brand's site for an installer can land on you.
9. Bing Places and other listings
AI tools like ChatGPT lean on Bing for search. A free Bing Places listing helps you show up there. 26% of homeowners in our survey had used an AI tool to research a contractor3.
Should an HVAC company buy leads?
Only if you can call back within minutes and you track how many book. Shared leads go to several companies at once, so the first one to call usually wins. Exclusive leads cost more but are yours alone.
| Lead type | What you get | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Shared | One homeowner, sent to several companies | A race to call first |
| Exclusive | One homeowner, sent only to you | Higher price. Ask how the lead was found |
| Pay per call | A phone call over a set length | Wrong numbers. Ask what's refundable |
| Your own ads | Leads from your own Google or Facebook ads | You pay for clicks that don't call |
In Canada, HomeStars is free to join and charges only when a homeowner chooses to contact you11. Before you buy from anyone, ask how the homeowner agreed to be contacted. Canada's anti-spam law needs consent before you send commercial texts or emails10.
Why do HVAC companies lose leads they already paid for?
They don't answer fast enough. The lead calls, gets voicemail, and calls the next company. Leads called back within 5 minutes converted 8 times as often in a study of 5.7 million leads12.
Three fixes:
- Answer live during business hours. Or use an answering service.
- Text back every missed call right away. Something like "Sorry we missed you, how can we help?"
- Call every form within 5 minutes. Set phone alerts so the right person sees it.
This is why we set up missed-call text-back and instant replies for clients before we spend more on ads.
What's the best mix of HVAC lead sources?
For most HVAC companies we'd start here:
- Google profile and reviews first. Free, and it feeds Local Services Ads.
- Local Services Ads next, for repairs and no-heat calls.
- Search ads on top, aimed at heat pumps and replacements.
- Facebook ads for offers, and to follow up with people who visited your site.
- Past customers every season, for tune-ups and replacements.

The numbers on this page are Debut Marketing's 2026 findings. We took the typical figure (the median) across published studies, ad platforms and our own campaigns, and put it in Canadian dollars at the Bank of Canada's 2025 average, $1 USD = $1.3978 CAD. Ad spend per booked job divides cost per lead by the share of leads that book: 42 in 100 for search and Facebook (our contractor median1) and 44 in 100 for Local Services Ads (SearchLight Digital's HVAC figure5). Facebook is shown at 42 and at 25 in 100, because its leads often book less. The 25 is an example, not a measured rate. Homeowner figures are from our survey of 1,113 Canadian homeowners3.
