A commercial contractor's client is a developer, a building owner or a business. The people who actually leave Google reviews are often someone else: the neighbours, commuters and subtrades who deal with the job site every day.

I've run ads for contractors for more than five years, and a weak Google profile makes every ad dollar work harder. For commercial firms, the fix starts with who is writing the reviews.

Who is reviewing commercial contractors?

We coded the review excerpts Google shows on each commercial and civil listing. Four groups come up again and again:

  • Neighbours of active sites: night work, noise, blocked parking, dust and long road closures.
  • Other drivers: branded trucks cutting people off or speeding. A company name on the truck door tells an angry driver exactly who to review.
  • Subtrades and suppliers: praise for organized sites and on-time payment, complaints when payment or direction is missing.
  • Clients: usually positive, but outnumbered. Only 42.3% of commercial listings have an excerpt naming a staff member, the usual sign of a real client review.

Developers and building owners rarely think to leave a Google review after a tenant improvement or a multi-family build. The neighbour kept awake by a 2 a.m. concrete pour does. If nobody asks the clients, the neighbours end up writing the company's Google profile.

Why it matters even if you don't sell to homeowners

Google's own help page on local ranking says results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking" (Google Business Profile Help).

Developers, property managers and architects check Google like everyone else before they shortlist a builder. A 3-star rating with complaints about trucks and noise is often the first thing a new client sees.

What commercial contractors can do about it

  1. Ask every client at handover, and put the project manager's name in the request. Named reviews are the clearest divider in the data: 96% of the most-reviewed construction companies have them.
  2. Ask subtrades and suppliers who value how you run a site. Their reviews already show up on the better-rated commercial listings.
  3. Treat your trucks as advertising. Driving complaints appeared on several listings in this sample. A fleet driving policy is reputation management.
  4. Get ahead of the neighbours. Send notice letters before loud or night work, post a site contact sign, and answer site complaints publicly and calmly.
  5. Reply to every critical review with specifics and a contact name. It shows future clients how you handle problems.

Questions contractors ask

4.38 across 26 commercial and civil companies (directional), against 4.86 for 59 residential builders and renovators.

How can a general contractor get more Google reviews from clients?

Ask at handover, put the project manager's name in the request, and send a direct review link by text the same day.

How we put this together

These figures come from the Digital State of BC Construction Companies on Google 2026. On September 29, 2026 we searched Google for "construction company [city] BC" in 20 BC markets and scored the 99 companies Google returned, using the same 100-point Debut Profile Score for each. The full method, the scoring rules and the limits are in the report's method section.

This page covers the commercial and civil segment: 26 companies whose review excerpts describe tenant improvements, multi-family, institutional, road or site work. That is below the 30-company floor we use for firm conclusions, so every commercial figure here is directional.
