Roofing slow season marketing: 12 ideas ranked by cost and payoff, when the slow season hits across Canada, why pausing costs you, and what to skip.

Custom home with a lit great room in the snow

Is there a slow season for roofers in Canada?

Yes, but it depends on how many days your crews can safely work. Winnipeg averages 79 days below freezing all day from December to February; Vancouver averages 3, but gets 590 mm of rain from November to February1. So the Prairies mostly stop, while the coast trades replacements for leak calls.

  • BC coast: replacements slow from November to February, but leak and repair calls pick up.
  • Prairies: most roofing stops from about December to March. Calgary's chinooks open short windows; Winnipeg's rarely do.
  • Ontario and Atlantic Canada: snow and freeze-thaw slow replacements, and ice dams bring emergency calls.

Which roofing slow season marketing ideas pay off fastest?

Calling back unsold estimates pays off in days and costs nothing. Pre-selling spring replacements and asking past customers for reviews come next. Ads, service pages and a storm campaign take longer, but they're what fill next season. Here are 12 ideas, ranked by how fast each turns into booked work for the money.

What brings in roofing work this winter?

Unsold estimates, leak and emergency repairs, commercial maintenance agreements, and gutter, ice dam and attic work where winters are snowy. These are jobs you can win in December and January, often from homeowners who already know you, while the other ideas build next spring.

Call back every unsold estimate

Every roofer has a pile of quotes from last summer that never got a yes or a no. Many of those homeowners still need the roof. Call each one in December or January, offer to update the quote and mention spring install dates. If they went with someone else, ask what tipped it.

Leak and emergency repair ads

On the BC coast and in Atlantic Canada, winter is when roofs fail. Run a repair campaign with call ads during the hours someone answers, pointed at a repair page. Only 33% of the bottom quarter of roofing websites in our study of 131 roofing companies link to a repair page2. And answer every call: 84% of Canadian homeowners in our survey said in an emergency they'd hire the first contractor who answered3, and missed calls can now be charged on Local Services Ads4.

Commercial and strata maintenance agreements

Building managers plan budgets in winter. Offer a yearly agreement: two inspections, drain clearing, a photo report and small repairs at a set rate. In BC, RoofStar guarantees on low-slope roofs already include reviews at set years5, so managers think in inspection cycles. Only 44% of roofing websites link to a commercial page2.

Gutters, ice dams and attic checks

A November gutter visit gets you on roofs and noticing shingles due next year. Where snow is heavy, ice dam removal is real winter revenue for crews trained, equipped and insured for it, following your province's fall protection rules. Only 20% of roofing websites mention ice dams or winter protection2, and an attic ventilation check is indoor work that often leads to a spring job.

How do roofers fill next spring's calendar in winter?

Pre-sell replacements, check in with past customers, meet referral partners, run a late-winter roof age campaign, and build your storm campaign before storm season. Homeowners who know they need a roof are glad to lock in a spot before the spring rush.

  • Pre-sell spring replacements. Quote in winter, book April and May dates, and give a set price for committing early. In Alberta, taking money before the work from in-person sales away from your office needs a prepaid contracting licence6. Put the deposit and weather terms in writing.
  • Check in with past customers. Ask how the roof did through the storms, remind them about the warranty and send your review link. Don't offer anything for a review or ask only happy customers; Google prohibits both7.
  • Meet referral partners. Home inspectors, realtors and property managers meet homeowners with roof problems, and spring is when houses sell.
  • Run a late-winter roof age campaign. Most asphalt roofs need replacing every 20 to 25 years8, so target neighbourhoods built around 2000 on Facebook, where a contractor lead costs about $619. Our Facebook ads guide for roofers has the hooks.
  • Build the storm campaign now. Write the hail and wind ads, build the storm page and set up the claim-help form while it's quiet. When a storm hits, you change the area and the budget and you're live that day.

Should roofers pause marketing in the slow season?

No. Cut the budget, but don't switch everything off. Keep brand and emergency campaigns running, post to your Google profile every week, and use the time to build pages and train your crew. In our experience, accounts that go dark take weeks to get back to their old cost per lead in spring.

Fewer roofers bid in winter, so the clicks you do buy often cost less, and a homeowner with a leak in January has fewer roofers to choose from. Meanwhile:

  • Post every week. A photo of a winter repair or a finished job with the town name. Google says posts show on your profile in Search and Maps10. 97% of the top 3 roofers in our snapshot used "Roofing contractor" as their category11; check yours.
  • Build your service pages. 85% of the top quarter of roofing websites link to both a repair and a replacement page, against 15% of the bottom quarter2, and 65% of homeowners say transparent pricing makes them more likely to call12. Our roofing SEO guide has the page plan.
  • Train the crew. Teach foremen the review ask, how to spot gutters and skylights worth quoting, and how to talk to the neighbours on a job.

What not to do: don't cut prices across the board, don't copy another region's storm page, and don't let night calls go to voicemail if your profile says 24/7. If you'd rather have a winter plan built for you, see our advertising and lead generation or marketing for roofing companies.

Questions contractors ask

Is there a slow season for roofers?

Yes. On the Prairies, roughly December to March, when Winnipeg averages 79 days below freezing all day1. On the BC coast, replacements slow but leak repairs pick up from November to February.

Should roofers advertise in winter?

Yes, but differently. Keep brand and emergency repair ads running, and shift the rest to pre-booking spring replacements and commercial maintenance.

How can a roofing company make money in winter?

Leak and emergency repairs, ice dam removal where you're trained and insured for it, commercial maintenance agreements, gutter work in late fall and attic ventilation checks.

Can I take deposits in winter for spring roofs?

Yes, with the terms in writing. In Alberta, taking money before the work from in-person sales away from your office needs a prepaid contracting licence6.

What's the cheapest slow season idea for roofers?

Calling back every unsold estimate from the past year. It costs nothing and those homeowners already know you.
