11 Painting Marketing Ideas To Fill Your Schedule
Eleven ways for painting companies to get found, earn trust and keep the crew busy all year, with what to do first for each one.
Key findings
- The warranty is what separates the best painting websites. 91% of the top quarter state a warranty or guarantee, against 15% of the bottom quarter.1
- Cabinets are the missing page. Only 48% of painting websites mention cabinet painting.1
- Reviews follow the map. The businesses in Google's top 3 map spots had a median of 89 reviews, against 39 for spots 4 to 10.1
- Everyone reads reviews, and AI is part of the search. 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 45% have used AI tools like ChatGPT to find one.2
Most painting companies grow on word of mouth until it stops being enough. The ones that keep growing add a few reliable ways to get found online, show off their work and stay in front of past customers. This guide covers 11 painting marketing ideas for residential and commercial painters, with what to do first for each one.
I've marketed contractors for more than five years, and painting is the trade where a good photo does the most selling. The ideas that work best are rarely the flashiest: Beyond The Brush Painters booked 8 jobs from Google Ads in the 20 days after its new website launched.3
A quick note on how people find a painter now: BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses2 and 45% have used AI tools like ChatGPT to find one. Being visible and well reviewed online is no longer optional.
1. Get Your Website Ranking Locally
Your website is the base for everything else. When someone searches "house painters in [your city]", local SEO decides whether they find you or a competitor.
What to do:
Claim your Google Business Profile: it's free and decides whether you show up on the map. Fill in every field and add photos of your own jobs. (More on this in idea 8.)
Give each job type its own page: interiors, exteriors, cabinets and commercial. Each one gets searched by name, with different prices and different worries.
Target local searches: use phrases like "exterior painting in Burnaby" or "cabinet painting in Victoria" instead of plain "painting".
State your warranty in years: the check that most separates the best painting websites from the rest: 91% of the top quarter state a warranty or guarantee, against 15% of the bottom quarter1.
Put your phone number where a thumb can reach it: about 6 in 10 painting websites show a phone number in the first screen on a phone1. Make it tap-to-call, with a quote button beside it.
Make the site fast on phones: compress photos and use good hosting. Most people will find you on a phone.
Three trade websites that rank
All three are sites we built. Each has a page for every service and every area it wants work in, and the phone number where a thumb can reach it.
-
Beyond The Brush Painters
Residential painter, Vancouver
- The first screen covers the usual worries: free estimates, $2M liability insurance, open 7 days and a written touch-up guarantee
- A page for each of 7 services, from interiors to popcorn ceilings
- Phone number in the menu bar on every page
- The main content showed in 0.8 seconds on our phone test
8 booked jobs from Google Ads in the 20 days after launch.
-
Kiwi Custom Construction
Custom pool builder, Kelowna
- "Start your project" and "See our work" on the first screen of a phone, "Get a Quote" in the menu
- A page for each service: pools, concrete and hardscaping, woodwork
- A scroll animation that builds a pool, so buyers see the process before they call
- The main content showed in 0.7 seconds on our phone test
80% more website traffic in the first three months.
-
Mack’s Flooring
Flooring store and installer, Campbell River
- Phone number in the menu and a "Book Today" button on the first screen
- A page for each flooring type, plus commercial
- A page for each nearby community it serves, from Comox to Quadra Island
400+ leads and more than $1M in revenue from its marketing in the first year.
2. Ask for a Review at Every Final Walkthrough
Reviews decide who shows up on the map. The businesses in Google's top 3 map spots for painters had a median of 89 reviews, against 39 for spots 4 to 101.
- Ask on the walkthrough: when the drop sheets are gone and the room looks finished, then text your direct review link that evening5.
- Ask everyone: not just the happy ones, and never offer a discount for a review. Google prohibits both6.
- Ask for a photo: a review with a picture of the finished room does more than words alone.
3. Put a Sign on Every Exterior Job
Neighbours watch a house get painted for days. A sign turns that attention into calls.
- Yard sign: up on the first day, and left a week after the job with the owner’s permission.
- Door hangers: on the houses around each exterior job: "We just painted your neighbour’s house."
- Wrap the van: your name, phone number and what you paint. Beyond The Brush’s wrapped van carries its brand everywhere the crew drives.
4. Take Before and After Photos of Every Room
Painting is easy to photograph and hard to judge before the job. Proof decides the call.
- Same angle, good light: drop sheets gone, ladder out of the shot.
- Use them everywhere: on the job type page, your Google profile, social media and your ads.
- Get it right once: a professional photo shoot of your best jobs pays for itself here.
5. Offer a Colour Consultation
Picking a colour is where many homeowners stall. A free half hour with swatches turns "maybe this year" into a booked date, and only 21% of painting websites mention one1.
- Put it on your site: a short page and a button on every interior page.
- Bring samples: large swatches in the homeowner’s own light.
- Book the job there: have your calendar with you.
6. Sell Cabinets All Year
Cabinets are the painting job homeowners plan in any season. HomeStars puts cabinet painting at $1,500 to $8,500 a kitchen7, and only 48% of painting websites mention it1.
- A cabinet page: before and after kitchens, your process (cleaning, sanding, spraying) and a price range.
- A cabinet ad: a before and after kitchen carousel runs well all year (see idea 11).
7. Pre-Sell Spring Exteriors in Late Winter
Exterior paint needs about 10°C or warmer, so the season runs roughly May to October and peaks June to August8. The painters who book spring exteriors in February don’t scramble in May.
- Email past customers and last year’s quotes: in February, with a booking deposit and a firm start week.
- Sell interiors in the cold months: and keep the crew busy until the weather turns.
8. Set Up Your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the most important free marketing tool a painter has. It decides whether you show up in the map results.
- Fill in everything: business name, phone, website, hours, service area, categories and a clear description of the painting work you do. Pick the category that matches what you do most, and add the others as secondary categories.
- Add photos often: finished jobs, work in progress and your crew. Fresh photos keep the profile active.
- Get steady reviews: BrightLocal found 74% of consumers look for reviews from the last three months2. Ask every customer, reply to every review, and never offer anything in exchange; Google prohibits it6.
- Post updates: finished jobs, seasonal offers and news. Google says posts show on your profile in Search and Maps9.
- Know what changed: Google removed the Q&A section and replaced it with "Ask Maps", which answers questions from your profile, reviews, photos and website. The more complete your information, the better those answers are.
- Check your performance report: see how people found you and whether they called, visited your site or asked for directions.
| What to check | Good | OK | Needs work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Number of Google reviews | 89 or more (the top 3 median) | 28 to 88 (the median listing and up) | Under 28 |
| Star rating | 4.5 or higher | 4.0 to 4.4 | Under 4.0 |
| Newest review | In the last 2 weeks | In the last 3 months | Older than 3 months |
| Your replies | Every review | Some reviews | None |
| What reviews mention | The job, the town and the crew | One of those | Only "great job" |
9. Build Referrals with Realtors, Designers and Property Managers
Pre-sale repaints, new-owner refreshes and rental turnovers come through these people every week.
- Realtors: offer fast quotes and quick start dates for pre-sale repaints.
- Interior designers: they choose the colour; be the painter they trust to get it right.
- Property managers and strata councils: 86% of painting websites show commercial work1. A strata repaint is a big job planned a year out.
10. Run Google Search Ads
Search ads catch the homeowner who is ready to hire. A painting lead from Google typically costs about $193 CAD10, so send every click to the right page.
- One campaign per job type: full repaints, exteriors and cabinets, each sent to its own page.
- Copy what worked: Beyond The Brush Painters booked 8 jobs from Google Ads in the 20 days after launch, at a 7X return.3
- Skip Local Services Ads in Canada: there’s no painting category on the Canadian list, though there is in the US11.
- Read the setup: our painter Google Ads guide has the campaigns and keywords.
11. Run Local Facebook and Instagram Ads
Facebook reaches homeowners months before they search, which suits cabinets and spring exteriors.
Why Facebook and Instagram ads work for painters
- Reach: more than 3.5 billion people use Meta’s apps every day12, including most homeowners in your area.
- Local targeting: show ads only in the neighbourhoods and towns you serve.
- Cheaper leads: a contractor lead typically costs about $61 on Facebook1316, against about $193 for a painting lead on Google search.
- Built for visuals: a before and after room is exactly what stops the scroll.
1. Pick your campaign objective
- Leads: collect contact details with an instant form or on your website. The best place to start.
- Traffic: sends people to your website, but you pay for visits rather than leads.
- Awareness: useful for staying known in your area once lead campaigns are working.
2. Set up targeting the 2026 way
Meta's Advantage+ audience is now the default for lead campaigns, and many detailed interest options were merged or removed, with the old ones switched off on January 15, 202617. What still matters:
- Location: set it tightly to your service area. This is still a hard limit.
- Age: a minimum like 25+ helps focus on people likely to own a home.
- Your own data: past customer lists and website visitors make strong custom audiences.
- The ad itself: the photo and the offer now do most of the targeting.
3. Make ads worth stopping for
- Real photos and video: of your own jobs, not stock images.
- Before and after: the same room or house from the same angle.
- Short, clear text: what you paint, where, and a next step like "Get a free estimate".
- A reason to act now: a free colour consult or a spring exterior booking window.
4. Choose a format
- Carousel: several jobs, or before and after shots, in one ad.
- Video: a 15 to 30 second time-lapse or walkthrough.
- Single image: one great photo with a clear offer is often enough.
5. Set your budget
- Start small: $20 to $40 a day for one service area, for at least a few weeks.
- Test: try two or three ads and keep the one with the lowest cost per real lead. Our painter Facebook ads guide has ad ideas.
6. Track the right numbers
- Click-through rate: are people interested in the ad?
- Cost per lead: what each inquiry costs.
- Booked jobs: the number that actually matters. Call every lead back within minutes: in a study of 5.7 million leads, the ones called that fast converted eight times as often18.
Where to start
You don't need all 11 ideas at once. Most painting companies get the best results by doing a few things well:
- Get found: a page for each job type, a complete Google Business Profile and a sign on every exterior.
- Get trusted: a review at every walkthrough, before and after photos and your warranty in years.
- Stay in touch: pre-sell spring exteriors in February and keep cabinets selling all year.
- Add fuel when you need it: Google search ads for repaints and exteriors, Facebook ads for cabinets.
Start with the first two, measure where your jobs come from, and add more once they’re working.
Questions contractors ask
What’s the best marketing for a painting company?
A page for each job type, a review at every walkthrough and before and after photos everywhere. Add Google search ads for full repaints and Facebook ads for cabinets once those are in place.
How do painters get more customers in winter?
Sell interiors and cabinets, and pre-sell spring exteriors with a deposit in February. Exterior paint needs about 10°C, so plan the calendar around it.8
Do van wraps work for painters?
They help people remember your name, but they rarely bring calls on their own. Wrap the van once your Google profile and website are strong, because that’s where people check you.
Can painters use Google Local Services Ads in Canada?
No. There’s no painting category on the Canadian list. In the US, "Painter" is a Local Services Ads category.11
